Wednesday – Maths

Today we have started a new Maths Block. We will begin learning about time. This includes:

  • daily routines
  • days of the week
  • language of time for example first, next, last, after that
  • Introduction to time (How many lego bricks can you place in a tower in 1min, 2min, 3 mins etc)
  • Beginning to think about clocks measuring time (o’clock times)

Today the children completed a ‘Blast Off’ to find out what they already know. Next we will learn about this and at the end of this block we will do a ‘Touch Down’ to see how far our learning has come.

Teacher Your Monster to Read

Today children in classes 3 and 4 will come home with a username and password for the app ‘Teach you Monster to Read’. Yesterday the KS1 children also brought these home. This app is a great tool for learning the phonic sounds and learning to read words and sentences. This is a great way to improve confidence in reading whilst having fun playing games. We hope the children will enjoy using it.

In addition you can sign up to the ‘Oxford Owl’ website for free and you will have access to lots of age-appropriate ebooks very similar to the reading books we have in school. Sign-up is quick and easy and there are no costs involved.

Y4 PARENTS : SWIMMING LESSONS

We have received confirmation that swimming lessons will cease until further notice at Thorne Swimming Baths.

Following the latest update regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust will be closing all leisure venues from 8:00pm on Wednesday 18 March.

Michael Hart, chief executive of Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust said: “We are committed to ensuring that we reduce the risk of Covid-19 for all our staff and customers.

“As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and government advice regarding social distancing all of our leisure venues will be closing at 8pm today and will remain closed until is it deemed safe to reopen.”

Tuesday – Beautiful Artwork

For the past couple of weeks we have been talking about how we can give thanks to our local heroes. The children have been drawing pictures to give thanks and our aim is to make people smile. We hope our artwork can make you smile today!

For any children who are self-isolating why not have a go at home! We love using ‘how to draw’ videos in class 3 and 4 and all of these pictures have been completed independently by the children. We think they have done an amazing job!

Tuesday Phonics

Today we revised the /er/ and /ur/ digraphs. We practised reading and writing words containing these sounds.

/ur/ as in turn, curl, surf

/er/ as in mixer, boxer, deeper

Image result for jolly phonics er

You can find the Jolly Phonics song to match this sound at 11 mins and 58 seconds on the video link below:

Below is a video for each of the graphemes /er/ and /ur/. Watch and listen to the videos. Next watch the video again but with the sound muted. Can your child read the words and sentences by themselves?

Next – Challenge your child to segment (sound out) and write some of the words from the videos. Let your child have a try by themselves and then model again if they do not get it quite right. As an extra challenge, can you child write a simple sentence? There are some examples below:

I can surf.

I can mix the food with the mixer.

Multiplication Madness!!

Today we revised our knowledge of multiplying, using numbers of up to 4 digits by 2 digits! The children created their numbers using dice and used column method to solve the calculations! Well done everyone you blew my socks off with how accurate your multiplication is.

UPDATE: COVID-19

Today, we need to go further, because according to SAGE [the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies] it looks as though we’re now approaching the fast growth part of the upward curve.

And without drastic action, cases could double every 5 or 6 days.

So, first, we need to ask you to ensure that if you or anyone in your household has one of those two symptoms, (the high temperature OR a new and continuous cough) then you should stay at home for fourteen days.

That means that if possible you should not go out even to buy food or essentials, other than for exercise, and in that case at a safe distance from others. If necessary, you should ask for help from others for your daily necessities. And if that is not possible, then you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies.

And even if you don’t have symptoms and if no one in your household has symptoms, there is more that we need you to do now.

Thank you for your continued vigilance and support at this uncertain time

Miss Salter, Mr Butler and the executive team of the XP Trust.
