Captain Tom 100 Challenge! 🏅

This Friday, Friday 30th April, marks the beginning of the Captain Tom 100 Challenge which will continue until Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May.

The family of Sir Captain Tom Moore is inviting the world to take inspiration from his famous 100 laps around his garden to celebrate Tom’s life, his generosity of spirit and the hope and joy he brought to millions.

YOU can join this celebration and take part in the Captain Tom 100 by setting yourself your own challenge based around the number 100!

Let the number 100 be your inspiration and do something amazing, whether it’s..

100 Star Jumps

100 minutes of gaming

Baking 100 cupcakes

Singing for 100 minutes.

We would love to see lots of you taking part and taking lots of photographs of your challenges. Please send any photographs or videos to [email protected] so we can celebrate your contributions on the blog.

Reading skills in year 2

The children worked in mixed groups today to discuss their reading comprehension texts and apply the skills they have been learning in literacy labs.

They were skimming and scanning, looking for specific words and I was proudly watching them work independently. Well done crew 💚

What a day for a picnic!

Our core text for the next 3 weeks in English is ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Picnic’ and to hook the children and immerse them into their learning, today they had their own picnic.

Not only was it fantastic crew building and enjoyable but they also had a great discussion about what a picnic should be and what they enjoyed the most.

I can’t wait to see the work that comes from this text

Selfless act of kindness by class 9

Class 9 have been learning about how Captain Sir Tom Moore made a difference to other people by doing a kind and selfless act.

We discussed how that made him feel and how fantastic everyone thought he was because of the money that he had raised for charity.

The children wanted to do something similar and they said that they also wanted to donate to charity.

We have had lots of discussions recently about listening to people more than we talk as this will help us to learn more so I challenged every child to be completely silent for 10 minutes and if they managed it, I would donate £5 to the NHS charity on their behalf…and guess what…they smashed it (knew I should have said half an hour).

Well done for your selfless act class 9 and for thinking of others

Shout out for Lilly

Our learning legend today was Lilly for getting smart! She has managed to grasp subtraction and was grappling with some really tough number sentences.

On top of that she was coaching a partner and was modelling how to answer the questions using pictorial form perfectly.

I am so proud of you Lilly!

If you can spare 23 seconds, watch this video of her in action…fantastic!

Moving a mountain with kindness

Today Year 2 have listened to a story called Manjhi moves a mountain.

It is all about a man from India who lives a long way from any health care so he single handedly began digging a tunnel straight through the mountain. This allowed his village much easier access to schooling and health care. It took him 20 years to do and we discussed how he was selfless, kind, determined and resilient.

This led us on to a discussion about the differences between England and India and one of those was the primary religion in each country.

We learnt all about Ganesh, the Hindu God of luck, good fortune and kindness. The story says that he has large ears so that he can listen carefully to what people tell him and a small mouth so that he speaks less and listens more.

Here are some of the examples of how he might have looked…I think they’re fantastic! Well done!

Mindful Monday!

In crew Shaw this morning we have been discussing mindfulness and what it means.

The children then  took their mindful task outside, using their senses, sound, touch, sight and smell.

Red Nose Day Crew.

Our morning crew was words linked to comic relief.( fundraising, Red Nose Day,  comic relief and donations) Each group had a different word and had to make as many different words as they could think of.  Awesome team work again class 9!
