How can we help the world we live in?

As part of the home learning, we have had a little look at propaganda posters ready for when we are back at school! We started to think about how we could create one for deforestation and the children had a go on their own. I think we have some great initial ideas!

Silent Discussion

Last week, Crew Knowles tried out one of our new protocols – Silent Discussion. Our crew completed this protocol at the end of the lesson as a reflection of learning. Each person had to silently answer questions written on paper but they were also able to agree and question other responses that had been put down. I was SUPER impressed with our first attempt at a silent discussion and I was impressed with the reflection of learning that took place. Well done Crew Knowles!

Classifying Animals

Crew Knowles have worked so hard today classifying animals in to different categories! We have looked at the different observable characteristics of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds as well as vertebrates and invertebrates. The reasoning and explanations from the children about how to classify animals blew me away and they all worked so hard to achieve their ME.

Well done Crew Knowles!

PUMPKIN COMPETITION

Thanks to all who have entered the pumpkin competition. The deadline for entries is 12pm today. Unfortunately any entries received after this time will not be part of the judging. One winner per phase will be announced and all entries will receive a small treat on their return to school next Monday. Details of the competition are below:

🎃🍁🍂Happy half term 🎃🍁🍂

At Green Top we are sad that family learning can’t take place as it would usually in our classrooms and therefore we have pledged to have a family learning activity each half term for the whole school community to get involved with.

The first family learning challenge will be a ‘Carve or Decorate your own pumpkin’ competition. This competition will be judged on 31st October. There can be one entry per child and all entries must be entered by a photograph sent to [email protected] by the 12pm Tuesday 27th October. As photographs are entered they will be blogged on the website for all to see. All students who enter will receive a ‘treat’ on their return to school on 2nd November.

In addition one winner will be selected from each phase. Winners will be announced on October 31st.

The Vanishing Rainforest

As part of our English cycle today, we introduced the new text of The Vanishing Rainforest. Rather than just read the story, the children only had access to the pictures from the book. Each group then had to use their inference skills to retell their own story based on the images alone. Everyone interpreted the images really well and I was very impressed with the accuracy of the inference! There was lots of discussion throughout the lesson with each group building on and sharing their own ideas. Well done Crew Knowles!

Factors, multiples and prime numbers!

In maths we focused on looking at factors, multiples and prime numbers today. To practise the different skills we did an around the room activity accessing lots of different question styles. Crew Knowles did a fantastic job at ‘getting smart’ and all worked collaboratively to support each other. Well done everyone!

Researching forest fires

As part of our English hook lesson today, Crew Knowles researched forest fires and put together a set of information slides. We looked at what forest fires are, what causes forest fires, and the impacts of forest fires. I was super impressed with everyone’s ‘work hard’ attitudes to learning! Well done!

Conversation Starter

Do you ever ask your child what they’ve been learning this week only to get told ‘nothing’ or ‘I can’t remember’.

To try and help with this, each year group will share a specific question each week about that weeks learning to try and help get the conversation going.

Let us know if it’s useful and helps children talk about their learning.
