Friday – Time

Today we have been learning about o’clock times. We have been talking about the position of the long hand (minute hand) and the short hand (hour hand). We have been doing some different clock crafts.

Can you read o’clock times?

Can you make your own clock craft?

Teach Your Monster to Read

Some parents have reported that they were unable to log-in to this game or that the app is now charging a fee to download.

We have looked into this and you child is able to access this for free on a computer and only through this link (not through the main website page):

www.teachyoumonstertoread.com/u/3069607

You can then use your child’s login details.

If you would prefer to use this on a phone or tablet you will be able to download it from the store but it is currently charging 99p for the download. You can then log in using your child’s details. Please make sure you type the username and then the number next to the star. No password is required in the 3rd box.

Thursday – Phonics

We have been continuing to revise our phase 3 graphemes. Today we focused on the /oo/ digraph. This can make two sounds. A long sound and a short sound this is explained in the video below.

After watching the videos we tired to read and write some of the words by ourselves.

Extra challenge: Can you children write these sentences?

I can zoom to the moon.

I can look at a book.

Thursday Maths – Time

In Maths we started to learn about time. We said the days of the week in order and talked about what day it is today, what day will it be tomorrow and what day it was yesterday. We also talked about school days and weekend days and if we knew which days our special event were on e.g. swimming club on Wednesday’s.

Next we thought about the children’s daily routine on a school day and made a timeline of 5 things they do from waking up to going to school. Maybe you could draw a timeline at home too and talk about the things you do in the correct order.

Free Phonics Games

Phonics Play are currently offering a free service! This is a great website for practising phonics skills. You can log in using the username and password below to have full access to the site. Currently children are expected to be working within Phase 3 but some children may feel more confident with the Phase 2 games until they know some of the Phase 3 sounds. More confident children may want to access some of the Phase 4 games which use the same sounds but with more challenging words.

By the end of Reception children are expected to be working within Phase 4.

In order to ensure we are in touch with all of our students whilst they are self isolating or not attending school due to the closure notice. We have created a web page on our website ‘home learning portal’ (https://sites.google.com/greentopschool.co.uk/home-learning-menu/home) which will be regularly updated.
In addition, teachers will be inviting children in F2-Y6 into the ‘google classroom’ to work on activities (these will also be hosted on our home learning page.) Reception children will have a pack sent home with an exercise book and pencil enclosed tomorrow after school to complete their activities in from next week if working at home.
There will also be sessions for teaching staff in Y1-Y6 to ‘hangout’ using google hangouts through their school log ins and these times will be communicated via the school blog but all be in a morning (9am / 9.30am / 10am OR 2pm / 2.30pm). In order to ensure we are in communication with children whilst they are not at school we will follow the following protocols for communication.
1st check
Online learning interaction with a class teacher.

2nd check (if first check not achieved by 11am)
Text to main mobile number asking to make contact via email or learning action by 12pm

3rd check (if second check not achieved by 1pm)
Phone Call Home to contacts in order (speaking to the child if possible).
Final check (if necessary)
Home visit by 2 staff
Finally, we have, and will continue to, provide our whole curriculum on the ‘Our Expeditions’ tab of the school website. As the time progresses we will populate the case studies within our Summer Expeditions to allow for children to learn at home.
Any child who would like an exercise book and pencil to record their work in is welcome to do so please ask class teachers.
Thanks

Wednesday – Maths

Today we have started a new Maths Block. We will begin learning about time. This includes:

  • daily routines
  • days of the week
  • language of time for example first, next, last, after that
  • Introduction to time (How many lego bricks can you place in a tower in 1min, 2min, 3 mins etc)
  • Beginning to think about clocks measuring time (o’clock times)

Today the children completed a ‘Blast Off’ to find out what they already know. Next we will learn about this and at the end of this block we will do a ‘Touch Down’ to see how far our learning has come.

Teacher Your Monster to Read

Today children in classes 3 and 4 will come home with a username and password for the app ‘Teach you Monster to Read’. Yesterday the KS1 children also brought these home. This app is a great tool for learning the phonic sounds and learning to read words and sentences. This is a great way to improve confidence in reading whilst having fun playing games. We hope the children will enjoy using it.

In addition you can sign up to the ‘Oxford Owl’ website for free and you will have access to lots of age-appropriate ebooks very similar to the reading books we have in school. Sign-up is quick and easy and there are no costs involved.

Tuesday – Beautiful Artwork

For the past couple of weeks we have been talking about how we can give thanks to our local heroes. The children have been drawing pictures to give thanks and our aim is to make people smile. We hope our artwork can make you smile today!

For any children who are self-isolating why not have a go at home! We love using ‘how to draw’ videos in class 3 and 4 and all of these pictures have been completed independently by the children. We think they have done an amazing job!
