Remembrance in history club

In history club this evening we learned about the different colour poppies used to celebrate the sacrifices made in wars.

The red poppy for servicemen and women from the First World War up to the present day.

The purple poppies are worn for the animals who have died in wars.

The black poppy rose was introduced in 2010 to represent the contributions of the African, Black, West Indian, Caribbean, Pacific Islands and Indigenous communities to wars.

White poppies have been worn since 1933 as a symbol of peace and remembrance.

We made a wreath of the red and purple poppies to display in KS1 corridor as a mark of respect.

Class 10 feature finders! 📝

Class 10 have been preparing for their next independent piece of writing by looking at features of a non-chronological report. They were trying identify the variety of conjunctions, fronted adverbials and facts that they could see! Class 10 collaborated superbly well to find these features and were able to feed them back.

Christmas Gift Donations for Thorne Food Bank

Just a reminder that KS1 are looking for donations of small gifts to spread some Christmas cheer to the children of Thorne as part of our ‘Not All Superheroes Wear Capes’ expedition. We intend to hold a family learning event on Thursday 16th November to wrap the gifts and these will be presented to the food bank on the evening of our award ceremony.

Ideas for gifts could include – bubble bath/toiletries, hair accessories, small soft toys, chocolates, sweets, stationary such as stickers, pens, pencils or notebooks, reading books or jigsaws etc.

Gifts should be handed to your child’s class teacher before Wednesday 15th November.

Or, if you would prefer, you could send in a small cash donation instead and we will buy a gift on your behalf.

Please help us to be heroes in our community.

Many thanks

The KS1 team x
