Class 9 took 10 to read

This afternoon we took 10 minutes during accelerated reader to read for pleasure. Some of us found a book we were really enjoying in accelerated reader which was great, but others chose books from the book shelves that they wanted to read and for the whole 10 minutes the class were so engaged in reading. I even got to finish a book I had been reading too! It is so beautiful to hear the children reading and getting so stuck in to their books.

Thank you, class 9!

Class 10 goes to the library! 📚

Well, it is safe to say that Class 10 loved their trip to the library this morning! We loved the walk and the fresh air to get there. More importantly, we loved exploring the library and reading and looking at lots of different books. Some of us even squeezed into the tightest spots to read a good book. We had lots of fun!

Roman soldiers! 🗡️🏛️

Today, Class 10 have been learning about the life of a Roman soldier. We even learned the Latin names of items like a sword, helmet and shield amongst others. We learned that there was some positives of being a Roman soldier such as you are well fed and get equipment provided. However, there were negatives as well with the main one being that you could be killed!

Roman Workshop visit! 🏛️

Well, it is fair to say that Class 10 loved their Roman workshop visitor. They loved hearing lots of new facts about the Romans from Clare and taking part in lots of exciting opportunities. This ranged from learning to march like the Romans would have (using Latin commands) to acting out Roman plays.

Here, Class 10 were preparing for battle by marching and getting into the Testudo (tortoise shell) formation:

We then started to learn some more Latin and translated one of our ‘Slaves’ shopping lists:

Next, we learned about Roman physics and built our own arches and aqueducts. We especially loved this!

Finally, we finished off by writing on Roman wax boards, playing the Roman game of knuckle bones and with a little bit of drama to end the day:

Class 10 would like to thank Clare for their great day! 😆

Year 3’s Roman day!

We had a wonderful visitor in today in Year 3, Clare from the amazing Want2Be Workshops came to help us explore our expedition theme this term; Romans! The children had so much fun dressing up as soldiers, marching like a Roman legionary, using wax tablets to translate Roman writing, creating arches and aqueducts and playing a popular Roman game; Knucklebones that Roman children (and bored soldiers) used to play… Did you know children still play this game in France?!

Well done to everyone for getting so stuck in, and a HUGE thank you to Clare, she runs a fantastically well organised workshop and had some fantastic equipment for us to see and use too!
