Y3 & Y4 – Back to Learning with a Bang!

What a busy and exciting couple of days back in school for Year 3 and 4, where we have engaged with lots of valuable input from experts about our expedition topic – war and how it changes lives.

On Monday, we enjoyed a very informative zoom call with two wartime experts who talked us through the lives of children in WW2, as well as guiding us through the work done by women as part of the ‘home-front’.

Then today, we have enjoyed another visit by the Victoria Cross Trust:

Mick, who worked with us back at the start of our expedition, revisited us to share more information about the Victoria Cross medal and some of its recipients from Doncaster, in particular: Thomas Harper VC, Thomas Bryan VC and George Wyatt VC who we are writing biographies about to include in our final product.

And, Keith guided each class through Thorne Cemetery to identify and research the Common Wealth graves located there. We were fascinated by the soldiers that we learnt about and the visit really helped to highlight the importance of the upcoming Remembrance Day and how important it is to remember those who fought – and still do so – for our country. We will remember them!

To end our fantastic day, Keith presented us with some beautiful commemorative slate plaques which show each of the VC Soldiers that we are learning about and the act of bravery which led to them receiving their most prestigious award. We look forward to keeping these plaques in school and to future generations Green Top students benefitting from these going forwards.

Bonfire night activities in Nursery

The children have spent yesterday and this morning talking about and exploring Bonfire Night. We have played instruments listened to the sounds they make to mimic the sound of a firework. We have talked about what fireworks look like. The children thought of excellent words to describe the appearance and sounds.

“Whoosh, bang, pop, sparkle, loud, high, bright, big, hot, huge, fizz, crackle”

We have painted fireworks in the night sky, crafted tissue paper sparklers and built/painted bonfires and danced with scarves to Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’.

The children finished off the morning by talking about how we can stay safe on bonfire night. I was so proud of how well the children retained information and were able to listen carefully to each other.

I hope you have a wonderful and safe bonfire night tonight.

EYFS Autumn Disco

The children had a wonderful time during the last week of half term at the Autumn disco. Lots of fun, sweets, awesome dance moves, laughter and hot dogs. What more could we want? Mr Kershaw and I also enjoyed having a boogie to ‘Time Warp’ which so many of the children were excellent at too!

Year 5 Bikeability information

Children will need sensible shoes and trousers, uniform top and a waterproof jacket for Bikeability. The sessions happen regardless of weather!

Tuesday 5th/Wednesday 6th November- Crew Spetch sessions

Wednesday 6th/Monday 11th November- Crew Walton sessions

Tuesday 12th/Wednesday 13th November- Non Rider sessions (for those who have ticked the non rider box)

Children need to bring in their bikes and helmets for their allocated days and park them in the bike spaces on the playground. Those who have requested equipment hire will be provided with them at school.

Have a wonderful half term break!

Reception phonics

This week in Phonics we have been covering the following sounds. The sounds will be sent out for the children to be practising to recognise the phoneme, say the phoneme and then write the grapheme.

The children are really starting to learn and retain those sounds but will need support to blend those sounds together. Have a go at the green words and the more they hear those sounds being blended the easier it will become.

Thanks

Mrs Wallace and Mrs Jones.

EYFS Disco

We had a super Autumn disco on Wednesday. The children were super excited and beautifully behaved! Lots of awesome dance moves!
