PUMPKIN COMPETITION

Thanks to all who have entered the pumpkin competition. The deadline for entries is 12pm today. Unfortunately any entries received after this time will not be part of the judging. One winner per phase will be announced and all entries will receive a small treat on their return to school next Monday. Details of the competition are below:

🎃🍁🍂Happy half term 🎃🍁🍂

At Green Top we are sad that family learning can’t take place as it would usually in our classrooms and therefore we have pledged to have a family learning activity each half term for the whole school community to get involved with.

The first family learning challenge will be a ‘Carve or Decorate your own pumpkin’ competition. This competition will be judged on 31st October. There can be one entry per child and all entries must be entered by a photograph sent to [email protected] by the 12pm Tuesday 27th October. As photographs are entered they will be blogged on the website for all to see. All students who enter will receive a ‘treat’ on their return to school on 2nd November.

In addition one winner will be selected from each phase. Winners will be announced on October 31st.

Conversation Starter

Do you ever ask your child what they’ve been learning this week only to get told ‘nothing’ or ‘I can’t remember’.

To try and help with this, each year group will share a specific question each week about that weeks learning to try and help get the conversation going.

Let us know if it’s useful and helps children talk about their learning.

Phonics lessons online

Parents of children in F2, Y1 and Y2 may want to explore this website https://lettersandsounds.org.uk/for-home/overview. This website provides pre recorded phonics lessons which can be used to support your children with the phonics screening check which typically takes place in Y1 during the Summer term.  This year our Y2 student are expected to take this phonics check during the second half term.

Phonics Learning

Today we continued to practise blending sounds together. We introduced a new activity called ‘Treasure or Trash?’ In this game we had to decide if the word was a real word or if it was ‘trash’ (a made up word). This opened up some discussion about the meaning of the real-words and we had some great descriptions – especially about pigs!

Look at all these children who chose to come and explore our phonics games today whilst they were playing outdoors.

Marvellous Maths

This week in Maths we are learning to compare the size of objects and use a range of vocabulary when talking about what we have found out. The children are really enjoying these activities and we have seen some brilliant reasoning skills as they have investigated the conkers!

Phonic Sounds Keyrings

Please remember to return your phonic key rings if your child is ready for the next set of sounds to be added. This week we have introduced the sounds – m, d and g and have had lots of practise at blending the sounds to read simple words.

Today we played a game called Buried Treasure to practise blending the sounds in words.

Enjoying the great windy outdoors

Today we enjoyed exploring outside and observing our natural environment. The children also enjoyed playing in the wind and listening to the different sounds it makes.

Have a great weekend

Mrs Burton 🙂

Phonics Keyrings

Tomorrow the children will bring home a phonics keyring. This keying will contain the sounds we have covered in class over the last two weeks. Please practise the sounds regularly at home to ensure children can recall the sounds confidently. Keyrings can be returned every Wednesday in the plastic wallet provided for new sounds to be added. Some of the children will be feeling confident with these sounds already and we ask that these children practise making words using the sounds e.g. Can you make the word as, it, sat, cat. You can also make a word and ask your child to blend the sounds together to read the word you have made.

When learning the sounds with your child it is really important to ensure they pronounce the sounds correctly. This video will show you how each sound should be pronounced. It is really important that children learn to pronounce the sounds correctly as it will make it easier for them to read words.

The video below shows the songs the children learn in class to match each sound:

Don’t forget we will also be posting a weekly phonics activity in the Google Classroom. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s phonics development please do not hesitate to ask you child’s class teacher.

The Hungry Caterpillar

We have had lots of fun exploring the story of the Hungry Caterpillar for the past two weeks.

For our hook activity we tasted some of the foods that the hungry caterpillar ate in the story.

We have also been retelling the story using the vocabulary from the text.

We learned how to draw a caterpillar and how to use our phonics skills to label our pictures.

Fabulous Phonics

Last week we explored the sounds s, a and t. Look at our super learning!

This week we will be focusing on the sounds p, i and n.

Every week we will set a phonics activity on the online classroom that you could try at home. Please check in the ‘classwork’ section for last week’s homework.
