We were so pleased with the turnout for our presentation of learning / Christmas production on Monday – thank you to all who could make it! And, we were especially proud to be joined by our special guests, Keith and Mick, from The Victoria Cross Trust. They were thrilled to receive their gifts from the children and they now take pride of place amongst all their other awards and memorabilia in the Trust shop:

Y3 & Y4 – Back to Learning with a Bang!
What a busy and exciting couple of days back in school for Year 3 and 4, where we have engaged with lots of valuable input from experts about our expedition topic – war and how it changes lives.
On Monday, we enjoyed a very informative zoom call with two wartime experts who talked us through the lives of children in WW2, as well as guiding us through the work done by women as part of the ‘home-front’.
Then today, we have enjoyed another visit by the Victoria Cross Trust:
Mick, who worked with us back at the start of our expedition, revisited us to share more information about the Victoria Cross medal and some of its recipients from Doncaster, in particular: Thomas Harper VC, Thomas Bryan VC and George Wyatt VC who we are writing biographies about to include in our final product.
And, Keith guided each class through Thorne Cemetery to identify and research the Common Wealth graves located there. We were fascinated by the soldiers that we learnt about and the visit really helped to highlight the importance of the upcoming Remembrance Day and how important it is to remember those who fought – and still do so – for our country. We will remember them!
To end our fantastic day, Keith presented us with some beautiful commemorative slate plaques which show each of the VC Soldiers that we are learning about and the act of bravery which led to them receiving their most prestigious award. We look forward to keeping these plaques in school and to future generations Green Top students benefitting from these going forwards.
Class 12 Remembrance
In G Block today, class 12 have been learning about the history of Remembrance Day and the understanding. They have produced some beautiful writing on the poem, ‘ In Flanders Fields’ Below is some examples.
Year 3/4 – Singing Homework
This week, Year 3 and 4 have been learning and studying the WW1 marching song – It’s a Long Way to Tipperary! We will be singing this at our Celebration of Learning / Christmas production so it would be really great if everybody could have a practise over half-term.
Thank you for your continued support, The LKS2 Team.
KS2 – XP Outdoors
Please remember to send your child with appropriate XP Outdoors kit suitable for the weather – especially now it is getting colder and wetter! Appropriate footwear is essential as the children spend time in the grassy XP Outdoors area.
A reminder of the days that XP Outdoors takes place:
- Tuesday – Year 4
- Wednesday – Year 3
- Thursday – Year 5
- Friday – Year 6

How many of these children’s books can you work out from the emojis? Add your answers in the comments!
Class 12 – Vocabulary in reading
Another really lovely reading session today. Selecting a range of new words from the new sections of our class text. Today’s leaning had a shared responsibility. Each table group had to use dictionaries to find definitions of two words they picked at random. Then they needed to write the definition and the word used in an example sentence ready to share with the full class at the end. We the collated our learning at the end for a shared learning experience, you can see it captured half way through (but I forgot the final picture!!) Smashed it guys, great work all.
Class 12 – BBK for the Blitz
Leading their own learning for our Blitz learning. Having several questions around the room and an information sheet they got to work working, each question built up their knowledge gradually for them to be able to recall back to me at the end of the lesson.
Class 12 – vocabulary in reading
Class 12 are really impressing me in our reading lessons. This one was focused on vocabulary. Here the children had to match a definition to the correct word. All words have been selected from our focus text. When the definitions were matched and checked they then set to work using the new vocabulary in their own sentences, allowing me to see if they were able to use the words in the correct context. Great job guys!
