Making pairs and adding more!

What wonderful work from Reid this week! Making pairs and making more, Reid was a true Stickability Stan in his learning this week as he solved lots of problems in his play. I wonder what Reid did when he had one left over?

Being a Builder!

In our expedition we explored the guiding question ‘Do all houses look the same?’ The children quickly were inspired to build houses of their own thinking carefully about the things they needed and the materials that were just right.

MP’s question time

A very special visitor was put in the hot-seat today in year 1 when Mr Nick Fletcher, our local member of parliament came to Green Top to answer questions about plastic pollution and climate change. The children certainly didn’t let him off lightly! Here are class 6’s awesome ‘I wonders’….

Miss Rodgers – Why is single use plastic still being produced when we know the effect it is having on our world? (It’s production is being reduced but we need to stop buying so much and chose alternative packaging too.)

Deacon – When will we stop making petrol and diesel cars? (Production in this country will end in 2030, although some cars imported from other countries will still be used in Britain.)

Junior – In Scarborough there is a ‘re-cycling’ fish where people can collect waste plastic from the beaches and put it in the fish for re-cycling. Could we have something like this in Thorne? (Mr Fletcher suggested we contact our town council to ask.)

Kalab – Why can’t there be a recycling centre just for plastic? (Mr Fletcher suggested we take the lids off plastic bottles so they would crush more easily to reduce their size and gave us some handy tips on how to make our plastic waste cleaner by not putting anything in our re-cycling bins that had touched food, or rinsing before re-cycling.)

Hunter – Is there a different, safer alternative to plastic? (Scientists are working on bio-degradable materials to replace plastic, but we can help by choosing snacks without packaging such as fresh fruit.)

Harrison – How could you make it easier to re-use our plastic bottles? (By choosing a hard plastic water bottle or by encouraging our school to go single-use plastic free as he has just suggested they do in the Palace of Westminster.)

I was so proud of the intelligent questions you asked and of the discussion we had afterwards about Mr Fletchers suggestions. It s awesome to see just how much you have learned about protecting our beautiful planet.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit us Mr Fletcher.

Well deserved learning legend postcards today for Rhys and Anais for smashing effort in their work and this weeks yellow t shirt winner Florence, who has blown me away this week with her Can-do Colin attitude. Sorry Florence, I can’t find your photo. I will post one next week.

Children’s Mental Health Week

Children’s Mental Health Week is taking place  next week on the  7th-13th February. This year’s theme is Growing Together. We will be encouraging children (and adults) to consider how they have grown, and how they can help others to grow.

The learning council will be reading and sharing a lovely story with our crews and this will be a real focus in our Community Crew. There will be lots of activities to join in with both inside and outside of school .

Parents and Carers – Children’s Mental Health Week

At Green Top we pride ourselves in allowing the students to talk about their feelings, emotions, moods and wellbeing everyday through our crew circles. This week in our crew circles we will continue to explore mental health and how we can ‘Be Kind’, we will be exploring this as part of our habits of work and learning.

Mindfulness Activities

To our parents, we want to take this opportunity to remind you you’re not alone and we are here to help if something is affecting your mental health please reach out for our support.
