Dragon song

Continuing with strategies to improve our reading, Crew Rodgers memorised and performed a paragraph from our new class text ‘Zog’. Did you know creative activities such as this are proven to elevate mood and are excellent ways to look after your mental health?

Loving the jazz hands guys!

Scanning skills

Crew Rodgers have been practising their reading comprehension test skills today by scanning a piece of text for specific words. This is a great skill to have and will help them to answer questions more quickly in a reading comprehension test. The children were given a piece of text and a felt tip pen. They then had 10 seconds to scan the text for the given word. They all did very well. Why not try give it a try at home with your child’s reading book?

T4W

This week we have been using the talk for writing strategy to help the children with their sentence writing. Talk for writing involves using symbols and pictures along with words in a sentence which the children then repeat using actions to replace the pictures. This helps them to remember the sentence word for word as they write it down. Here are some of the ladies from Crew Rodgers performing sentences about dragons. Why not ask your child to perform one of the sentences they have learned?

You did brilliantly girls!

Beautiful descriptive writing

I had to share some of the online writing that I have been reading because I am so proud of how hard they are working and the pride they are taking in their work is just incredible. The photos are of some of the children that wanted to share their work.

I have also typed up some of the sentences that I have marked over the last few days because I feel they need to be seen by as many people as possible. THEY ARE AMAZING!!!!

The dragon has red, nasty eyes that glow like fire.

On top of his head stands black, spiky horns.

It smells like a bonfire in the sky.

He stamps his hairy feet through the mountains.

The dragon has a loud and terrifying roar!

He has sharp, pointy teeth, cutting though his mouth.

Rumbling from deep within his chest a thundering roar chased through the mountains.

Stretching slowly, the dragon opens his wings, ready to glide over the hills.

Year 2 TT Rockstars

Hi everyone.

We will be emailing you over the next week or so with your log in details for TT Rockstars, a fantastic online times tables game where you can choose your Avatar and practise fluency in times table questions set by your teacher. Each time you play you will win coins to spend in the Rockstar shop on clothes and other musical accessories. Don’t worry if you cannot answer many questions at first…the important thing is to stick with your practising so you improve all the time…just like a real Rockstar! You will focus a a small number of questions presented in different ways to begin with and, as you become better at answering them, more will be added in until you are a times tables superstar. If you have any issues let me know and I will do my best to help you.

Look at for an email in the next week with your log in details, search for TT Rockstars on your search engine and away you go.

Have a great weekend Miss Rodgers, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Dutton x

Key stage 1 reading competition

Reading is always high on our school agenda and as we can’t currently hear all children read at the moment, we would like to begin a new reading competition!

Every time your child reads a book at home, encourage them to complete the reading questionnaire below. If your child is in year 2 and already has a log in for accelerated reader from last lockdown you can quiz on their too.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdfkR-72Qm1r03t6Jl4BY-pH9AGwp_QWeO3d8kU8uAYt7RV2w/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&flr=0&gxids=7628

Your child’s details will be then be entered into a prize draw, to win £££££ at the end of the term. The more books they read, the more questionnaires they will take and therefore the more likely they are to be chosen at random to win the money!

Good luck everyone

Conjunctions are us!

Today in year 2 we have been working on choosing and using the correct conjunctions to extend our sentences. I set Crew Rodgers a challenge to use 6 different conjunctions – and, but, because, if, or and since – in 6 separate sentences. I’m very proud and happy to report that all 8 of the children in class rose to my challenge. I was also blown away with the awesome presentation displayed by Sofia and Andra.

Really great job everyone!

Name that dragon!

As you know we were visited at the beginning of the week by a dragon who left more than just footprints and scorch marks in the Green Top playground!

As we continue to care for the precious dragon egg we realised that we don’t have a name for him or her when the egg finally hatches.

That is where you come in Y2 crews! We have decided to hold a competition to find a name for our dragon baby. Be ready to share your ideas and reasons for your choice on hangout tomorrow morning at 9am for the chance to name our newest classmate!
