Phonics fun

Our fun in phonics was all about the ‘ou’ grapheme today. We practised with a little roll and read, reading and writing lots of ‘ou’ words and thinking of others. We even remembered that there are other graphemes with the same phoneme, such as ow.

Some superstars even managed some sentences. Lots of hard work and plenty of HOWL points given today! Keep it up, KS1!

Phonics sounds and spellings WB 21.2.22

The children have now been grouped for phonics based on their recent assessments and they will be working on sounds matched to their individual needs. These groups will be closely monitored and the children moved up as soon as they master the level they are at currently. If your child is to be part of one of these phonics groups they will have come home this evening with a postcard which indicates their group – pink, red or blue – and I will post their weekly phonic sound focus and spellings on the blog and on Classroom for them to practise for a touchdown activity at the end of each week. If you have any questions please do get in touch.

We became researchers!

Class 5 took on a research project this morning all about the 5 oceans of the world! We worked together to read information and learn some facts. Did you know that the Pacific Ocean is the largest, or that the oceans cover 70% of the earth? The smallest ocean is the Arctic. All these facts were recalled when the children presented their learning to each other. Great job class 5!

Champions!

WOW we have some awesome shoutouts this week!

Lauren and Riley have come top of Crew O’Neil and Crew Good’s HOWL points this week! Well done for racking up them points by working hard, getting smart and being kind!

Ethan and Hunter were chosen this week for their manners, kindness to their friends and for always respecting our classroom too. We love to see people living up to our Be Kind HOWL.

Ayla and Liam were chosen from both Crew Good and Crew O’Neil this week to be our Work Hard champions. They have really been making some good choices and we are super proud of the work they are achieving. This award has been so difficult to give this week, I am seeing some AMAZING work being produced by all of class 5!

Finally, our reading champion this week has been Isla. She has been doing so well with her reading, in class and at home too. I love to see you all engaging in reading, it doesn’t have to just be your school reading books.

We saw a turtle! (and lots more at The Deep!)

WOW what a day we had at THE DEEP on Monday. Class 5 had an amazing day out looking at all the animals we had been learning about in Science. We learnt that the world has changed lots over the past few million years and once upon a time looked very different.

We even got up close and personal with a giant turtle, how lucky were we?! I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as me, I think my favourite part of the day was seeing the turtle, or maybe the penguins, or actually it could’ve been the beautiful star fish… what was yours?!

Y1 phonics sounds and spelling WB 7.2.22

This weeks phonics focus sounds will be…
o-e as in home, u-e as in cube, i as in fine and i as in find, o as in cot and o as in cold

Our weekly spellings are…
were, house, home, hole, tube, cube, fin, find, cot, cold

Any help you could give your child with recognising the sounds and practising the spellings would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your continued support and to all those who practised last week’s spellings. It really does make a massive difference for the children to see that the work they do in school is considered just as important at home.

Out Of This World

BIG WELL DONE to Elizabeth this week for her amazing attitude to learning, earning her our OOTW certificate. Elizabeth has been working hard to take pride in her learning, making good choices in lessons to work with new people, asking questions and answering them too! Keep up the hard work, superstar!

Maths maths maths!

Class 5 are all mathed out today. Not only do we all look totally awesome in our mathematical themed outfits, but we have worked so hard in our maths lesson too. We looked at place value and representing numbers with tens and ones. We worked with different equipment then practised doing it ourselves, drawing the tens and ones! Well done to everyone for your super efforts!

Becoming Geographers!

Today we started looking at Geography and what it is that we might be looking at in our new case study…

After working hard to complete the jigsaw, class 5 realised they were looking at a map of the world!
We found the UK and lots of other awesome countries. Then we thought about what we already know and what we might want to learn too! We can’t wait to find out more about the world and how people are affecting it…
