Class 12 – Roman Roads

In expedition, we have been looking at the structure of a Roman road and why they were so important during the expansion of the Roman Empire! We used chocolate and biscuits to create a cross-section of a Roman Road, although I think the children enjoyed eating it more!

Take a look at some of the beautiful handwriting and presentation in books during our Roman road write up!

Being Kind in Crew Spetch 🌟

Yesterday, Grace won our learning postcard for being kind! Grace is a great role model and demonstrates how to be kind fabulously! When reading out the postcard, everyone in our crew predicted it was for Grace which just shows how well respected she is in our crew! we’re so lucky to have you! 🌟

Class 12 – Roman Workshop 🏛️

What a day it has been in Year 4 today! We were lucky enough to have Clare come into school to lead a Roman workshop for us. We managed to complete a wide-range of Roman-related different activities throughout the day.

We began the day with introductions and greetings in Latin. Once we had done this, we learnt what it would be like to be a part of the Roman army with Reuben making a great soldier! We then put our skills to good use during marching practise with Natalia doing a great job of leading the group! Take a look at our testudo!

Next, we practised writing Roman numerals and letters using the wax tablets. This was a method of writing that allowed the Romans to reuse the same equipment (a little bit like our whiteboards!)

We finished before dinner with a game of Merels. This was a two player game from the Roman times, very similar to noughts and crosses, which the children loved!

After lunch, we were introduced to Roman arches and aqueducts. We were able to build our own and could see the amazing physics behind the construction of an arch. Finally, we finished off with Roman mosaics to create some interesting patterns!

Here are some of the finished mosaics!

Roman Workshop visit! 🏛️

Well, it is fair to say that Class 10 loved their Roman workshop visitor. They loved hearing lots of new facts about the Romans from Clare and taking part in lots of exciting opportunities. This ranged from learning to march like the Romans would have (using Latin commands) to acting out Roman plays.

Here, Class 10 were preparing for battle by marching and getting into the Testudo (tortoise shell) formation:

We then started to learn some more Latin and translated one of our ‘Slaves’ shopping lists:

Next, we learned about Roman physics and built our own arches and aqueducts. We especially loved this!

Finally, we finished off by writing on Roman wax boards, playing the Roman game of knuckle bones and with a little bit of drama to end the day:

Class 10 would like to thank Clare for their great day! 😆

Crew Knowles: Edible Roads!

Today we created a cross section of a Roman road using biscuits and chocolate! We learnt about the 4 main layers of the Roman road that helped to make it so strong and durable. The best part was eating the road afterwards!

Class 8 super home learning

I have been blown away with the amount of home learning that class 8 have been bringing in recently! Well done Elea for working so hard! I particularly love that Thomas made cookies with his Nanna and took them to the police station to say thank you for being a local hero. Great work guys!

Year 2 visitor

Year 2 have had a special visitor this afternoon from James Fenwick who is a firefighter working for Humberside fire and rescue service. He told us all about his job and what he does day to day, his special kit that he wears and how to stay safe near fires and what to do in an emergency.

The children have loved asking questions and gained lots of new knowledge all about a local hero.

Thank you
