Year 1 Phonics

This week in phonics we are comparing the long /a/ sounds. We have also been practising spelling words form the red word list.

In Shared Reading we are learning to read and write words ending in the suffixes -ness and -ing. We are also learning to write sentences using the subordinating conjunction ‘when’.

Year 1 Spellings

Thank you to everyone who has been taking the time to practise spellings at home. It is really making a difference to children’s writing. To be on track at the end of year 1 children need to be spelling many words accurately.

Today we have sent home our new set of expedition spellings. These will be tested after the half term break. In the meantime please regularly practise spelling words from the red word list, starting with the easiest words that the children learned to read in reception and building up to spelling the words we have learned to read in Year 1.

Children will be tested on their red word spelling after half term and we will be looking for children to be spelling an increasing number of words correctly ready for entering Year 2.

Again thank you for your support. It is so lovely to see the children coming to school excited to show off their learning and showing much more confidence and motivation in their writing lessons. Keep it up Year 1, we are very proud of you!

KS1 Reading Challenge

This week we will be reviewing our progress so far on our school reading challenge. Each classroom has a display where children can track their progress towards their next milestone. Children also have a 100 square in their reading diaries so that you can follow along with their progress at home. Staff will cross out a number each time a child has read at home.

Children can read their reading books, books from home, comics, magazines or phonics homework sheets. Any reading is great reading! Each time your child reads at home this will count as 1 read. Please write each read in your child’s reading diary so staff can check off the numbers and track children’s progress.

Our current Leader in KS1 leader has read over 170 times this school year!!!

Here are the milestones your child is aiming for and our new certificates for each milestone:

I wonder if anyone will receive the Platinum award by the end of the school year?

Year 1 Phonics

The children in Year 1 have been continuing to work hard on their phonics knowledge this term. In our phonics lesson each day we practice reading and writing words and sentences using our phonics knowledge. We also practise our new skills through our Shared Reading sessions.

Here are the graphemes we have been learning:

We have noticed lots of improvement in the children’s confidence to read with many children now reading fluently and with great expression. Here are the Shared Reading books we have been reading if you would like to have a go at home:

Get your passports ready…

Year 2 expedition morning video

I am blown away by the fantastic learning that has happened in year 2 this morning. Our second case study for our expedition is geography and the children got a chance to try a range of foods from different countries around the world. They explored the country’s flags and learnt how to say ‘hello’.

They also did some research on the countries to record in their own passports and created a mind map of words to describe the food they tasted.

Some foods were a hit like apples and maple syrup but the olives didn’t go down too well!

Super learning today year 2, it was so lovely to see!
