Times Tables Rock Stars Challenge!

As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school, we are taking part in a friendly competition involving schools in England. The competition runs from 07:30 GMT Tuesday 14th November 2023 to 19:30 GMT Thursday 16th November 2023. It’s all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.

Children can play in any game mode with every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, earning themselves, their class and the school a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours, subject to a daily 60-minute limit (see below). Winning classes in the school and in the competition as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.

To support player wellbeing, there is a daily time limit of 60-minutes per player. In other words, each player can earn competition points for up to 60-minutes between 07:30 GMT and 19:30 GMT on 07:30 GMT Tuesday 14th November 2023 to 19:30 GMT Thursday 16th November 2023. Once the player goes beyond 60-minutes of play on that day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition.

Which Crew will be victorious? Who will rock their way to glory? Only time will tell…….

KS1 – Request for Glass Jars & Wrapping Paper

Next week, the children will start work on their decorated glass-jar candle holders. If possible, please could you send your child into school with a clean glass jar (no bigger than jam jar size). Please wrap up carefully and / or pass directly to class teacher.

We would also greatly appreciate any donations of Christmas wrapping paper as we will be using this in our family learning event on Thursday 16th November.

Y1 Phonics Drop In

We would like to invite all Year 1 parents to a phonics drop in session on Tuesday 14th November at 3-4pm in the school hall. During this session you can learn more about how your child learns phonics in school, explore some of our phonics activities with your child and ask any questions you may have.

If you would like to be a part of the choir and join us at one of the best events of the year come along to Young Voices Dinner Club each Monday lunch time in Crew Spetch. It will run from 12:30 until 1pm! We will also be practicing in Choir club every Tuesday 3-4pm.

Y1 Crew Schon – Home Learning

Wow Year 1, your home learning just blows me away every week. I am so proud of the attitude you have towards your learning. Over the holidays Vinnie and Alfie both made an awesome box model of a building from the Great Fire of London. Nasrin also painted a picture for her friend Poppy. What a lovely kind thing to do Nasrin, Poppy loves your painting! Nyah has been working hard on her reading skills at home. What a super start to the new term.

Also a huge congratulations for Aurelia who won two medals at her dancing competition in the half term break. Aurelia competed in a duet and also did her ‘Doll on a Music Box’ dance. Amazing Aurelia, we are so proud of you!

Year 1: Phonics

In Year 1 we have been consolidating our Phonics learning and building confidence in our reading. We have been focussing on reading red words and developing fluency in our reading. The children have learned lots of strategies they can use to be a good reader. We have also been practising segmenting words and writing the sounds we hear. It has been lovely to see the children having some ‘Lightbulb’ moments and realising they are becoming more confident readers and writers.

The Children in Miss Rodgers group have been learning alternative ways to write the sounds they have learned. They are also beginning to learn the next set of Red Words which they will continue to learn throughout Year 1.

THE GREEN TOP PRIDE OF THORNE AWARDS. Learning to be heroes in KS1. Can you help?

As we begin our second Autumn term and the run up to Christmas the children of KS1 are requesting your help. We have been learning about heroes in our local community and as part of this expedition we have had visits from many wonderful heroes including our Mayor, a midwife, police officers and a firefighter, and have gone out into the local area to visit other heroes who work in care-homes and supermarkets.

On Thursday 23rd November at 4pm, we will be celebrating the end of our expedition by holding the Green Top Pride of Thorne Awards ceremony and we would like your help in nominating someone who is a hero to you or your family. Today the children made lots of wonderful suggestions for possible recipients of an award – nurses, doctors, vets, police officers, firefighters, carers, dance teachers, swimming teachers, our school cook, foodbank workers – anyone who has gone above and beyond to help others would be a worthy nomination. We will be posting a Google form next week for you to make suggestions so please be having a think about who you would like to nominate.

We would also love to get an idea of how it feels to be a hero in our community by spreading some Christmas cheer to children in our local area. With this in mind we are asking parents and carers to send in a small gift to wrap and donate to the Thorne food bank to be distributed to its users over the Christmas period. Ideas for gifts could include – bubble bath, hair accessories, small soft toys, chocolates, stationary such as stickers, pens, pencils or notebooks, reading books or jigsaws etc.

Simply buy the gift you would like to donate and send it into school anytime before Wednesday 15th November. We will be holding a family learning event on the afternoon of Thursday 16th November where we will wrap the presents that you have donated. Or, if you would prefer, you could send in a small cash donation instead and we will buy a gift on your behalf. These will then be passed to the food bank on the evening of our award ceremony.

Annual Poppy Appeal

Crew Councillors will be going around classes from tomorrow with our Poppy Appeal products. We have recommended donations of £1 for snap bands, wristbands and stationery with zip tags and key rings 50p.

This afternoon, we have been creating our school wreath ready to send to the Remembrance Day Celebrations.
