Year 1: Miss Schon’s Phonics Group

This week we are learning the sound /ure/ ‘sure cure’. The children are continuing to impress me with their confidence and knowledge of all the things we have been learning. We have set ourselves a group challenge of improving our reading fluency. This week we have been having fun practising our ‘word count per minute’. Our target is to read at least 35 words correctly in one minute on an unknown text. The children have loved this and have said they are feeling more confident to recognise words by sight instead of having to sound them out. I have also noticed that children are spotting when they have not read a word correctly and are going back to try the word again. I am so impressed with you all and it is lovely to see you enjoying reading so much.

I have set the children a challenge to try this at home with their school reading books. Ask an adult to set a one minute timer and record how many words you read correctly before the timer runs out. Can you keep beating your score?

KS1 Community Crew Assembly

Big well done to our Crew Champions this week! We have had some amazing hard work this past week and this was clear with the amount HOWL points being dished out. Huge shoutout for the HUGE amounts of reading certificates given out this week, specially to Martha on 200 reads!!!!

Thank you to our adults for coming to celebrate with us, we hope you agree that we have a wonderful crew in KS1.

Class 9’s Wildlife Park Adventures

Last week we had the most wonderful day exploring Yorkshire Wildlife Park! The sun was shining and we certainly got some steps in. Lots of fun for everyone and some beautiful animals.
we even got to attend a classroom session to learn more about Polar Bears and their fascinating habitat. So many gorgeous photos, it was hard to choose just a few!!

Class 15 – Using Critique to Improve our Artwork

Today, Class 15 have enjoyed creating watercolour art in the style of Quentin Blake. We had a go at creating a picture of George Stephenson’s Rocket (an early locomotive) and then we used peer critique to help us make improvements to a second draft. Great effort everybody – you all did a fantastic job!

Year 1: Phonics Family Learning

Before half term children brought home a letter about our Phonics Family Learning event. We are excited to welcome you to your child’s phonics lesson to give you an insight on how your child learns phonics in school. The event will take place tomorrow and Thursday.
