Black history month and reading week merged beautifully this afternoon in Year 1 as Crew Rodgers and Crew Stone came together at the end of the day to listen to an event in the life of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a powerful and beautifully illustrated book called ‘Let The Children March’ by Monica Clark-Robinson. In 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, thousands of African American children volunteered to march for their civil rights after hearing Dr. King speak. They protested the laws that kept black people separate from white people. Facing fear, hate, and danger, these children used their voices to change the world. How inspirational is that? Our children listened intently to the story and I was so proud of the mature way they discussed the children’s actions and how much they had to say about the injustice of it all.

Class 5: Police Visit
The children had a super time learning about the different roles of the police last week. The loved looking at the different vehicles and learning about how the police use dogs and drones. Thank you to our awesome visitors. We had an amazing time and learned lots of new things about the police.

Class 5 Wonderful Homework
I am so impressed with the children’s attitude towards their home learning. Not only are they practising their reading and Numbots but we have also had some beautiful home learning. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent in beautiful homework. We are really enjoying sharing our homework in our crew sessions and the children have been adding their HoWL point to our class charts. I wonder who will be this week HoWL point winner?
Here is a selection of just some of the homework we have celebrated:

Class 5 Box Models
Today the children have been making box model Tudor Houses. I was so impressed with their independence and skills. Thank you to Mrs Green and Mrs Hardman who also helped the children today. What amazing models they are! We still have some finishing off to do on some of the models but the children have done a great job. Well Done Class 5!
Class 5 Drama Workshop
On Thursday Class 5 had such a fantastic morning in their drama workshop. We had a fantastic lady who was in role throughout the session, talking about the Great Fire of London and recapping the children’s learning. First she pretended to be Mr Farriner, the baker believed to have owned the bakery that started the fire. Next she became Samuel Pepys who wrote a diary all about the fire. The Children were answering lots of questions and she was very impressed with what they knew. The children then did their own freeze frame pictures and acted out a story in groups, as well as singing rounds of ‘London’s Burning!’ We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and got so much out of it! Well done class 5. I am so proud of how you can talk about the learning you have done so far.

Class 5 Numbots
I am so proud of how the children are challenging their own learning at home as well as at school. Many of the children in Class 5 have logged into Numbots and passed levels though playing the games. On Friday we had our first Numbots certificate presentation. Look how many certificates have been earned in the first few weeks! Keep it up Class 5!
