Year 1: Phonics

This week the children in Miss Schon and Miss Rodger’s groups are learning ‘ou – Shout it out’. We are also remembering ‘ow – brown cow’. When spelling words we are learning which words are spelt using /ou/ and which ones are spelt using /ow/. We are also continuing to practise our reading fluency. Can we read sentences fluently without having to sound out the words? The children can practise this in their reading books at home by re-reading sentences or pages in their books so they can see they are able to read faster and more effortlessly. Please encourage children to read their reading books more than once so they feel they have achieved this.

Class 6’s day at Lincoln Castle

We had a wonderful day consolidating our learning at Lincoln Castle today. The children were wonderfully well-behaved and loved sharing their learning with the staff at the castle. Our day was jam-packed with activities, from handling armour in the Victorian prison, to designing coats of arms, re-enacting a banquet and finishing our day by walking part of the huge wall and visiting the inside of one of the towers!

A huge thanks to everyone involved with making our day fantastic and a special mention to the children who made me proud, as always, with their excellent manners.

Year 1 Spelling

This half term we have been focussing on spelling red words. We will now consolidate our learning by practising spelling all of the red words we have been learning this half term. We have added two new red words ‘little’ and ‘your’ which we have introduced in class during our lessons. I wonder which red words you can remember to spell and which ones you need more practise with?

KS1 Disco Fun!

The children (and staff!) had a fantastic time dancing their socks off at our Autumn disco this evening. There were some amazing costumes and everyone had so much fun. A huge thanks go to our wonderful PTA, Friends of Green Top for organising this, and many other fabulous events that raise so much money for our school. You ladies rock!

Apologies for the somewhat blurry photographs in the slideshow below…it was difficult trying to get the children to stay still for the pictures!

key stage 1 community crew

A huge well done to all of our community crew winners this week. You have had a fantastic week, modelling beautiful manners and producing really great work. A huge well done too because our first reading certificate was handed out this week for reading 30 books so far, I can’t wait to see more get handed out! Well done key stage 1! Keep up the great work!

Class 6 Family Learning

A massive thank you to all our parents, carers and family members who helped the children make some fantastic weapons this afternoon in our family learning session linked to our latest expedition, Rags to Riches: What lies within the castle walls?.

They were given the challenge of helping the children to use their design and technology skills to plan, create, improve and test a catapult similar to those used to attack the medieval castles that the children have been studying. We had a fabulous afternoon using the different resources available and finished off by testing each of the catapults to see how far they would fire a missile.

All the children had a wonderful time and love showing off their learning at these events which wouldn’t be such a success without your continuing support! We are SO grateful.

PS. I hope you enjoyed the story!
