Tricky Words

This term we are focusing on reading and spelling tricky words. We have already introduced these words through our phonics lessons and now we are looking to see if children are spotting these words in their reading books or spelling them correctly in their writing. We are focusing on Phase 2 and 3 words but some children may progress onto the Phase 4 words. You can help your child at home by:

  • Watching tricky word videos (you can find some on youtube by searching ‘phase 2 tricky words’ etc)
  • Downloading phonics or tricky word apps
  • Making flashcards for reading the words by sight
  • Encouraging children to spot these words in their reading books and ensuring they are reading them automatically (not by sounding them out)
  • Encouraging children to spell these words (how may time can you write ‘the’ in 1 minute?)
  • Encouraging children to spell these words correctly when writing them in sentences

As always, if you would like any further information or support please do come and a have a chat! You can make an appointment with your child’s class teacher.
