Today is National Poetry Day and we celebrated in Class 6 by reading one of my favourite rhymes by Roald Dahl.
His take on the old fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, is hilarious and the children absolutely loved it. They particularly enjoyed trying to guess the rhyming words.
Pictures of me dancing, lots of colourful paintings,
These are treasures that I found,
I keep them safe, I keep them sound.
In crew this morning, year 2 read a poem about our most prized possessions. It was called ‘My treasures’and was written by Kate Wakeling. The children drew pictures of their own prized possessions and then we collaboratively wrote our own poem, with rhyming words. The children really enjoyed writing it and I am impressed at their use of phonics to support finding rhyming couplets.
As part of National Poetry Day, we had a fantastic afternoon when the author and illustrator Phil Sheppard visited us! We heard some really funny stories that he’d written as well as some funny poems and rhymes! There was definitely lots of laughs! We even practised some illustration skills as he taught us how to draw a shark!
This year’s National Poetry Day theme is refuge so we spent our crew session looking at what refuge means as well as at different examples of poetry. We then had a go at creating our own acrostic poems to reflect on what refuge means to us!
We also enjoyed listening to this little funny poem we found!
Well done to the children who won today’s attendance and school lunch prize draw today! Our attendance winners won a book in connection with Reading Week and our school lunch winners won a sweet treat!
Well done to Y6 for showing excellent sportsmanship this afternoon, showing encouragement to each other and playing some fantastic rugby. Well done Y6 and thank you for a brilliant afternoon!
Over the last two weeks we have developed our use of the chalk pastels and produced some more wonderful expedition linked artwork. I am so impressed with our brilliant snake pictures! x
Today we joined an online session with the author of a beautiful book called ‘A day for sandcastles’. What made this book special was that it was a wordless picture book, meaning it was a story told in just pictures. The story was read to us by the author and he told us all about the thought process behind it and how wordless books are made! We have challenged our class to see if they can create their own wordless story at home to bring in to share!
We had a lovely visit from Miss Knowles this week as part of our teacher swap to celebrate reading week! The children loved the visit and the story that was shared with us! You showed great listening and lovely respect towards Miss Knowles, thank you!
Yesterday afternoon, I had the privilege of going and sharing a story with Crew Ambler. It was lovely to go and see lots of familiar faces and catch up as well as read a book together. Thank you for allowing me into your Crew! I had a lovely time! Mrs Spetch x
