Class 8 fantastic collaboration

We introduced our new text today called Let the children March! The children were very mature about the issues in the book and we discussed segregation and civil rights in great detail. I was very impressed with them and how compassionate they were towards people who were treated differently to others. They then went into groups to answer questions about the text and discuss their thoughts on different parts. It was a great lesson!

Year 3 – Reading at Home

Last week, Year 3 children brought home a small blue ‘messages book’ with their school reading book, and we would just like to clarify the following:

Inside the little blue books, you will find:

  • your child’s reading book level – children should only be bringing home books that match the level indicated in their blue book as this is the level they have been awarded following their ‘Star Reader Assessment’ in school. This assessment is updated at the end of each term to check progress so levels will be changed then unless your class teacher deems this necessary beforehand.
  • a QR code to take you to the online Accelerated Reader programme – here, children can input the name or code of their completed book and take a quiz designed to help them develop their comprehension skills. AR quiz scores and minutes used are logged by the system, and will be periodically assessed by teachers to help us better understand how to support your child’s reading.
  • your child’s Numbots and TTRS login – children are encouraged to access Numbots if they still find this a useful and engaging tool, but are also invited to use TTRS regularly to help develop their times tables fluency.

The little blue books are not a ‘reading diary’ but if you wish to log your child’s reading at home then please feel free to use this. Teachers will check in with these blue books from time to time so feel free to include non-important messages that you would like us to take note of. However, any time-sensitive messages or matters of importance should be raised directly with your child’s class teacher to avoid it being missed.

Any further log-in details or the like will be added to these little blue books as we go, and you will be advised accordingly.

The expectations for home reading in Y3 are as follows:

  • Children should aim to read their level book at home with an adult, at least 3 x weekly.
  • Children should aim to quiz on AR at least 1 x weekly (depending on book length).
  • Children are responsible for changing their reading books via their classroom libraries and this can be done on any day of the week. Teachers will give pupils reminders to do this and support where necessary, but we encourage children to take the lead with this as they develop greater independence throughout KS2.
  • Children should keep their level book and little blue book in their school bag / book bag as this ensures they are in school with them each day incase they are needed by the class teacher or as part of a lesson.

We thank you for your support with this and, if there are any further questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with your child’s class teacher.

Reception: Community Crew 29th September

Another wonderful Community Crew session this week!

It was a real joy to see the children singing together so beautifully in the hall, a lovely moment of unity and celebration that truly captured the spirit of our school community.

This week, the children have also given shout-outs to their fellow crew members, recognising those who have demonstrated fantastic HOWLs (Habits of Work and Learning). It’s been heartwarming to witness the genuine support and encouragement they’re showing one another – a true reflection of our shared values.

A huge well done to Verity and Storm, our HOWL Point winners this week! Both have shown consistent kindness, worked hard, and demonstrated a real commitment to getting smart, a brilliant effort from you both.

Congratulations also to Ella and Clementine, who received our very first Healthy Eating postcards for always eating all of their school dinners. Keep it up!

And finally, a special congratulations to our Crew Champions this week: Henry from Crew Wallace and Jayden from Crew Jones. Your efforts and attitudes have truly stood out, a well-deserved recognition!

Well done to everyone for a fantastic week!

Reading Week!

Our annual reading week is coming up WC 6th October and we can’t wait to celebrate!

Throughout the week, our reading ambassadors will be helping us to celebrate reading in lots of fun ways! The ambassadors will be hosting the official launch event for our brand new library as well as a reading drop in event.

Other things happening throughout the week:

We will be hosting book sales where all books will be 50p

We will also be running our renowned ‘Crack the Code’ competition where children can attempt to crack the code to our safe full of prizes! This will also be 50p per go!

Year 3 – RE: The Story of Moses

Last week, Year 3 continued their RE learning around the Jewish religion and its stories about God’s promises. We learned about the story of Moses, from his escape as a baby in a Moses basket on the River Nile to his victory in leading his people out of slavery and through the Red Sea itself. To consolidate their learning, children reenacted scenes from the story and created story maps to retell the tale. Why not ask your child to retell you the story and see how much they can recall? Can they remember the ten plagues that God sent to Egypt to help Moses in persuading the pharaoh to release his slaves?

MacMillan Coffee Morning!

Thank you to all the adults that were able to join us on Friday morning to support our first coffee morning of the year and support MacMillan!

Our Student Leaders really enjoyed being a part of their first event and helping to sell some buns and cakes at the end of the school day!

Extended Study – Are you up for the kindness challenge?

Next week is NSPCC Kindness Week, to celebrate the week we are hoping to see lots of you demonstrating one of our HOWL’s – ‘Be Kind’ and showing lots of compassion.

There will be some added activities and challenges next week but to get us prepared let’s see how many of you can tick off some of the challenges on the kindness grid. You could even have a go at creating your own kindness grid for your crew to complete!

Can you share some photographs of how you have shown kindness this week? Remember to share your story in Crew next Monday!

Year 1: Phonics Drop In

On Thursday 2nd October 3-4pm Year 1 teachers will be hosting a Phonics Drop In session in the school hall. We would like to invite all parents and carers of Year 1 children to join us to find out more about our school phonics programme, how you child is taught phonics in school and what you can do at home to support your child. Miss Schön and Miss Rodgers will be available to talk you through activities and resources and to answer any questions or concerns you may have. There will be lots of activities for you to take part in with your child. Phonics is a huge part of your child’s learning in Year 1 and we really hope you can join us!

XP Outdoors | KS2 Den Building Week

This week, KS2 have taken part in our exciting Den Building Week. Armed with logs, branches, sticks, and plenty of imagination, every crew rose to the challenge of working together to create their very own shelters in the great outdoors.

What really shone through wasn’t just the impressive dens, but the way crews collaborated. Each year group showed amazing Craftsmanship and Quality – carefully thinking about design, testing ideas, and adjusting their builds to make them stronger, safer, and more creative. From problem-solving to making sure everyone had a role, our crews truly embodied teamwork at its best.

The results were fantastic: unique dens that reflected each crew’s creativity and resilience. More importantly, the crews had fun. Well done to all of KS2 – you should be incredibly proud of what you achieved this week!
