Y5 Heart Dissection

During our next case study, Year 5 children will be learning about the heart and circulatory system as part of their science curriculum work for this expedition. The children will get the chance to dissect a lamb’s heart. In the past, children have found this session extremely beneficial and gained a greater depth of understanding of the organ and how it functions. We understand, however, that there may be some children who will not feel comfortable with this, and so we will ensure that only children who want to take part in the activities do so.

We will also take all the necessary safety precautions required, purchasing hearts of food quality and making sure that the children wash their hands thoroughly after the activity. Please could you ensure that your child brings into school an apron or an oversized old shirt to protect their school uniform. These activities will take place on Wednesday 11th May. If you have any concerns regarding this activity, please contact your child’s class teacher or through the Y5/6 phase email [email protected]

Thank you and best wishes

Super spellers!

This week we have been working on the two different ways to spell ‘shus’ – cious and -tious. This afternoon we had great fun testing our partners when sitting back to back, with one person facing the screen reading a word and the other trying hard to spell it correctly. Keep up the hard work guys!

Researching The Great Plague

This week we (including me!) have learnt so many new facts about The Great Plague. The children have been working on creating anchor charts to show many of the interesting things they have learnt. I can’t wait to see them finished and displayed.

National Share A Story Month

During the week beginning May 2nd, we will be celebrating National Share A Story Month in school. Next week we are encouraging the children to bring in favourite books to share with their crew during reading time. It would be lovely to see lots of stories being shared around school.

If you have a favourite book or favourite place you like to read at home, why not send a photo in to Mrs Jackson at [email protected] It would be great to celebrate the reading you do at home too.

Spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future plus it’s a lovely thing to do!

Ready, Steady, Cook!

This morning year 5 hooked themselves into their Food Technology case study by taking on a ready, steady, cook challenge. Each crew split into 4 smaller teams and were given a mystery bag of ingredients. It was their choice how they prepared the foods and used them to create a dish. Check out the photos on the slide show below to see how they worked together to design and make their dishes.

The children produced fantastic dishes and I was very impressed with their team work. They were so proud of the way they presented their final food.

We had a special judge who came to sample the year 5 dishes and select winners for presentation and taste!

We are scientists!

Today we had a fantastic science hook day in Crew Jackson. The children shared their previous knowledge on the biology of the human body, by working collaboratively to draw where they thought the organs are inside themselves.

They then went on to check the correct location and shape of the organs and work together to ensure they could locate them more accurately. Well done guys for for some fantastic work.
