NSPCC ‘The Kindness Challenge’

Next week, we will be taking part in a week full of activities linking to Kindness. This is part of the NSPCC fundraising and awareness week.

We will be taking part in lots of fun activities during Crew each day and there will be lots of opportunities for children to complete Kindness Challenges at home too.

Next Friday, to raise money for the NSPCC, we will be holding a Non-Uniform Day for donations of £1.

Crew Schon Poetry

Today in crew we enjoyed learning about poetry. We listened to three different poems and joined in reciting them with actions.

Here are two of the poems we enjoyed.:

We can’t wait to do it again. We had so much fun!

London’s Burning for Year 1

Mr Kershaw helped us to do a scientific experiment this afternoon to show us exactly why London burned so quickly in 1666 during the Great Fire of London and brought our first case study to a smoking finale. First we put our Tudor box models close together, just as the houses and buildings were almost 400 years ago. The fire quickly spread from one to the next until all that was left were ashes and glowing embers. Next we lined up the houses just as close, but with a ‘fire break’ – a gap in the row – which was made in the actual event by pulling down a house with fire hooks. The experiment worked perfectly and the fire was prevented from spreading by the gap.

What an amazing way to experience history first-hand. Thank you so much Mr Kershaw for helping us to deepen our understanding in this way. Memories like these are priceless!

Black History Month and Day 2 of Reading Week in Year 1

Black history month and reading week merged beautifully this afternoon in Year 1 as Crew Rodgers and Crew Stone came together at the end of the day to listen to an event in the life of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a powerful and beautifully illustrated book called ‘Let The Children March’ by Monica Clark-Robinson. In 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, thousands of African American children volunteered to march for their civil rights after hearing Dr. King speak. They protested the laws that kept black people separate from white people. Facing fear, hate, and danger, these children used their voices to change the world. How inspirational is that? Our children listened intently to the story and I was so proud of the mature way they discussed the children’s actions and how much they had to say about the injustice of it all.

Class 5: We are Artists!

During Case Study 2 we have been learning about the different techniques artists use. We have also been learning about Primary and Secondary colours and have been mixing our own colours.

Class 5: Police Visit

The children had a super time learning about the different roles of the police last week. The loved looking at the different vehicles and learning about how the police use dogs and drones. Thank you to our awesome visitors. We had an amazing time and learned lots of new things about the police.

Class 5 Wonderful Homework

I am so impressed with the children’s attitude towards their home learning. Not only are they practising their reading and Numbots but we have also had some beautiful home learning. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent in beautiful homework. We are really enjoying sharing our homework in our crew sessions and the children have been adding their HoWL point to our class charts. I wonder who will be this week HoWL point winner?

Here is a selection of just some of the homework we have celebrated:

Nyah made the Bakery on Pudding Lane – This is amazing Nyah! What a super model.
