Marvellous Magna

Class 10 and Class 11 had a fantastic experience on Tuesday when we visited Magna at Rotherham.

We were fascinated in the Fire Pavillion, watching the fire tornado spinning around. It was great to have a go at all the hands on activities.

In the Air Pavillion, we were able to stand in the wind tunnel and feel the force of a gale force wind. We had fun creating sound and movement with the power of air and we got to see a real tornado!

The Big Melt brought the former steelworks back to life, re-creating the experience of melting tonnes of steel. It was both dark and noisy and gave us a glimpse of what it was like before it became a museum.

Before lunch, we took part in a rocks and volcano workshop. We created lava flows with Bicarbonate of Soda and vinegar, and then created our play-doh volcano following its path. We then took soil samples with plastic straws. to investigate how the earth layers up. Finally we investigated different types of rock and used our detective skills to match them with the clues.

After a well-earned lunch we returned into the museum and had the opportunity to drive diggers and blow up rock faces in the Earth Pavillion.

With time running short, we visited the final area – the Water Pavillion. Fortunately we managed to stay dry for the journey home, but it was good to see the water cycle in action and how waves are created.

We returned to school tired but happy, with another great Green Top memory in the bag!!
