KS1: Reading

Today the children brought home their first set of reading books for the new school year. Please encourage your children to look after these books and keep them safe in their school backpacks. This year we are asking that children bring their reading books to school everyday. This is to avoid missing books on Fridays when books are changed and also because staff plan to read your child’s books with them as regularly as possible.

Here are the slides that explain how children learn to read at Green Top School and the types of books they may bring home to share with you. Please take a few minutes to read these slides so you know how we work to support your child on their reading journey.

If you require any help or support please contact your child’s class teacher as we are always willing to answer and questions or concerns you may have.

Year 1 Parents – All Year 1 children brought home the first Year 1 Shared Reading book this week. Children at the expected level will be able to read this book. Next week we will begin our new phonics groups and your child will be placed into a reading group that is best suited to their current ability. Next week your child will be given the shared reading book that is more closely matched to level they are working in their phonics groups. We want children to enjoy reading and to achieve this we want children to read books that are closely matched to their current phonics level.
