Y6 practised their reading fluency skills by performing speeches from our expedition books. Each group read their speech fluently with great passion to protect our endangered species!

Y6 Tropical World
We had a lovely day at Tropical World today!
Our first activity was a workshop learning all about the different animals groups as well as how animals have adapted to suit their environment.
After out workshop, we explored Tropical World and enjoyed looking at all of the different animals! It was extremely warm so we felt like we were in a real rainforest!
Y6 Legends!
Here is a round up of some of our Learning Legends as well as our ‘Out of this World’ winners! We had a great week with lots to praise and celebrate! This included some great coaching, responding to feedback, grappling with maths, and even quizzing on Accelerated Reader.
A big shout out to Kayla who won a voucher of her choice from our Accelerated Reader competition!
Life Cycle Experts!
Y6 have been comparing the life cycles of different animal groups: amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, fish and insects. Each group had to become an expert in their area before moving to other groups to pass on their knowledge. By the end, each group had an anchor chart full of information about each animals group’s life cycle.

Positive Affirmations
To finish off our focus on Children’s Mental Health Week, we listened to a story (read by the fabulous Learning Council) called The Heavy Bag. The story, which focuses on a little girl who has lost her granddad, has a lovely message about sharing our feelings with others to lighten the load.
Why not listen to the story yourself?
After we had discussed the story, we created our own positive affirmations that we can read whenever our bags are feeling a little bit heavy. I was so proud of the lovely phrases that the children came up with and they are sure to put a smile on everyone’s faces!
We also have our own set of positive affirmation cards which we will change each day. Today’s affirmation chosen by the class is …

Thank you Freya!
Freya brought in her National Geographic magazine to share with the class as at linked to our recent learning on deforestation. She read the article about the lynx beautifully to her peers and we learned how deforestation meant that the lynx couldn’t camouflage to catch their prey!

Children’s Mental Health Week
We are celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week in crew all this week and today we listened to a story and focused on who would make up our support bubble.
We listened to the story ‘Lucy’s Blue Day’ and thought about the important message of the story. Why not listen to the story yourself?
After listening to the story, we thought about the people that help us to grow, and the people that we would share our feelings with. We created our own hot air ‘support’ balloon to always remind us that there are people to lift us up!
Why not have a go at creating your own support balloon following the tutorial below?
Classifying Animals
Y6 have enjoyed their biology learning today where they have looked at classifying broad animal groups into subgroups based on common observable characteristics. They started of with a knowledge dump before moving on to building background knowledge on the different animal groups through creating anchor charts. They then had to use their knowledge to be able to sort the animals!
National Storytelling Week
National Storytelling week has got off to a lovely start with our Year 5/6 Learning Council members sharing some stories with our reception and nursery crews!
Don’t forget to fetch in your favourite stories and to watch out for the Learning Council members in your crew!
