Y1: Phonics Screening Check

This week the children in Year 1 are taking part in the National Phonics Screening Check. The children have been well prepared for this through our Phonics and Shared Reading sessions throughout Reception and Year 1.

In the check this children will be asked to use their phonics to read some real and some pseudo (nonsense) words.

If you would like more information about this, please follow the link below to find out more and as always please contact you child’s class teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Phonics Lab

In Phonics Lab this week we have been learning the sounds /th/ /ng/ and /ai/ and the tricky words he, she, we, me and be. We have been practising reading and writing words and sentences that include the sounds we have learned so far.

Phonics

In phonics this week we have been practising the sounds we have learned so far with a focus on recalling j v w x y z and zz.

Our new sounds this week are the qu ch and sh digraphs. We have done lots of fun activities but our favourite was a phonics quiz!

We have had lots of children keen to practise their reading and writing skills during their provision time.

Phonics Lab

In phonics Lab this week we learned how to write a simple caption. We started by sounding out the words ‘it is a…’ and then we added the final word. We did 2 together with our teacher and then we had a go by ourselves without looking at any prompts. These are our independent attempts!

Phonics Lab

This week in phonics Lab we have learned to recognise the letters j, v and w. We have been practising our reading and writing skills. Look at our super lists of animal waiting to see the vet! We have to segment the sounds in the word we want to write and write the matching letters. Lots of us are now doing this independently.

Phonics Update

The children in F2 have now completed Phase 2 phonics and they have blown us away with their phonics assessments. At the end of phase 2 children are expected to:

  • Recognise all (or most) of the phase 2 sounds
  • Recognise the Phase 2 tricky words and spot them when reading
  • Be able to segment and write simple words containing the Phase 2 sounds e.g. cat, pan, duck, hill
  • Be able to read Phase 2 words and simple sentences (at the level of their reading book)

This week we have been focusing on speed blending and recognising some simple words by sight e.g. it, is, on. This is to develop our reading fluency. We have also been building up our memory of words by trying to recognise words that are repeated in books instead of needing to sound them out again.

Literacy Labs

In our final cycle of Literacy Labs we read the book ‘When Grandma Gave Me a Lemon Tree’. We had so much fun making and tasting lemonade and serving it from our lemonade stands. The children even helped to make their own lemonade stand too. I was really impressed with how many children wanted to make signs for the lemonade stands.
