Crew Knowles: Awesome Expedition!
Crew Knowles had a fantastic expedition lesson this afternoon learning all about Mayan life. I was really impressed with the independent reading and retrieval skills and all of the information they learned along the way!

Y4 PE – Long Jump!
Today our Year 4 enjoyed an athletics PE session practising their long jumps. We used iPads and an app called ‘measure’ to measure the distance of each jump. Great work everyone!
Just a reminder that Y4 PE will now be on a Tuesday afternoon and children will require outdoor kit.
Crew Shaw Target setting
In crew yesterday, the children set their own target for what they wanted to work on. They had a choice of what they felt they needed the most practice with and then they independently worked on this area…it was great to see them being so pro-active and leaders of their own learning.
Class 8 are geographers!
Class 8 have started their geography case study this week. They have been exploring maps, atlases and globes and discussing the different features. They found lots of keys, scales and images that needed to be unpicked to help us to understand the information. The children then presented some of their information that they found in their groups to the rest of the class. It was great to see them grappling together.
Diverse Doncaster – Where do I belong? KS1 extended study menu and parents overview.
Today we began our learning for our new expedition. Please find below links to the overview of what we will be learning in the summer term and extended study menu’s for Y1 and Y2. There is no obligation to complete all of the homework, but past experience has shown that studying themes at home linked to our expedition has helped the children to consolidate the learning they have done in class. Plus they LOVE sharing their new knowledge with you. Don’t forget to send the work into school or email photographs so we can celebrate their achievements.

Class 9- Mayan artwork with oil pastels.
The children had a brief introduction to the popular Mayan City, Chicken Itza and the importance of the pyramid, El Castillo.
They then looked at some oil pastel techniques to recreate their own version of this.
Here they are in action, their final pieces were wonderful, hopefully we will get some of the finished ones uploaded soon ☺️.
Class 6 Hook Week
We have had a very busy week in class 6 as we began our new Expedition – Diverse Doncaster. Where do I Belong?
We made double sided art work showing some of the familiar landmarks in Thorne – St. Nicholas’ Church, the water tower, Mr ap Harri’s house and Peel Hill, painted huge copies of some of these landmarks to decorate our classroom and sketched and coloured logos of some of the shops from our town. We were very lucky to have a visit from Phil Sheppard, who told us all about the books he has written and illustrated about Doncaster and gave us a live performance of some of his stories. We also used our knowledge of past and present to match some of the staff at Green Top to pictures of them when they were cute little bubbas!
We can’t wait to begin our learning next week.
Awesome Fundraising in Class 6
A huge thank you to everyone who donated, bought wristbands and badges and entered the raffle to raise money for the MND charity last week. I would also like to give a massive shout out to Elsie from class 6 and her family, who raised an outstanding £275 to buy raffle tickets. This is a cause very close to their hearts as they sadly lost Elsie’s grandad to the disease in 2011.
Once again the generosity of the Green Top community has blown us away!

Beautiful Work This Week
Being Human – Beautiful Speeches from XP Gateshead
The G29 students speeches answering our guiding question “What does it mean to be human?” is now live on our website.
You can listen again and relive the POL speeches here!
This beautiful work is also available to visitors to the QE Hospital at the Windy Nook Entrance via a QR code on the art installation. This is important work matters, raising awareness of the importance of organ donation. A work that chimes with Olivias’ concluding remarks to our POL.
“…being human is about our social structures and relationships. How we connect, understand each other and have a sense of understanding and acceptance for ourselves and others. We build our world through our memories and experience to decide where we want to go in the future. Humans grow through our community and others around us.”
XP Y9 Fieldwork to Thackray Museum
The Power of Change @ Carcroft
In Spring 2024, students from Years 5 and 6 at Carcroft School embarked on an Expedition to explore the 19th century’s impact on our lives today, examining whether its influence has been positive or negative. Students immersed themselves in the era by creating African pattern-inspired book bindings and sculptures. They delved into the work of British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonabare to understand cultural identity and globalisation. The history case study focused on the British Empire, particularly its effects on South Africa and the Zulu people, comparing Victorian society with Zulu society and discussing the legacy of these interactions. The science component of the Expedition related these historical impacts to the concepts of reversible and irreversible changes, using chemistry to draw parallels between the societal changes and scientific processes.
The Expedition’s culmination was an art exhibition-style event where students showcased sculptures inspired by Yinka Shonabare, reflecting on cultural identity and personal, cultural, or ethnic adaptation in an ever-changing world. This final product, along with literacy-based assessments and case study reflections, demonstrated the students’ learning and understanding of the 19th century’s influence. Throughout the Expedition, a diverse range of texts, including graphic novels and classic literature, enriched the students’ experience. Despite limitations on fieldwork due to economic conditions, video calls with South African residents offered insights into the lasting impacts of the British Empire on the Zulu people, enhancing the students’ global perspective and understanding of historical legacies.

‘How will what I do today impact the world tomorrow?’ @ Norton Infants
The students’ final product drew together learning from all three of these case studies. They created these activity booklets, which contain examples of beautiful artwork and written information, and include activities for children to complete – here’s a sample of their work below!
We would like to donate these booklets to local places so that children can complete them whilst they are out in our community! If this is something that you feel you would like copies of, we can send them to you! Please send an email to [email protected] and we will organise sending them to you!
